After the Storm

It always happens after a restful sleep

Under stars with their own light
And a moon that you notice shines so bright

At first, you make quick conclusions
Eyes without glasses are just seeing lightening bugs
Or lightening generated from heat
Like in the desert
But you're not in the desert

Until you hear the unmistakable sound
And make arrangements to protect
What you haven't prepared for
After forty or sixty years

The storm comes

It drives forward so you pray in fear
At once that the boy will no longer be a copper wire
But recognize the Niagara inside
And make his own lightening

Surrendering comes when you finally realize
There's nothing you can do
Except wait for the bird songs
And the quiet
That always come

After the storm
