A Lightless Desert

After I landed,
the drive from the airport
to my new home
was dark.

Sitting in the back seat,
I remember looking out
into the empty desert night
like the empty harbor night
from a former home.

I wondered about
a distant father
stepping alongside
a soon to be mother

and three wanderers
seeing a star
waiting for them
with gifts in hand.

Sometimes
the fragrance
of those gifts
enters my space

and I feel the light
from stars shining
on a lightless desert.
